On 15th April, 1917, HMT Arcadian, as she was then known, was en route to Alexandria in  Egypt from Salonika in Greece when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-74 when 26 miles north-east of the Greek island of Milos. She had 1335 troops and crew aboard and sank within six minutes with the loss of 279 soldiers and sailors. One of the soldiers who did not survive was James Tyson of 21st Rifle Brigade.
